Dear East Ridge Family,

It’s that time of year when we continue to work very hard to help your children learn and grow, and at the same time we are preparing for their success next year! Later this spring, teachers will begin making class groupings for the 2019-20  school year. I can assure you that the teachers at East Ridge devote much time, effort and care in developing classroom rosters. Every child is given equal consideration in the placement process to support our goal of a positive and strong educational experience for each child. The class placement process is very comprehensive. We create classes based on the following beliefs and principles:

  • Every East Ridge teacher is dedicated to providing a nurturing, positive learning community to support high academic standards and meet the learning and social needs of each child.

  • Every child’s placement is important and deserves careful consideration. Classroom teachers, specialists (PE, Music, Library), learning support staff and the principal are all part of the placement process. Parent input is important and valued.

  • Students will benefit from new experiences. An important life lesson for children to learn is that working with new classmates and teachers with different styles prepares them to successfully handle new experiences with confidence.

  • Balanced classrooms should reflect the diversity of our society. All classes will be balanced in terms of student instructional levels, behavior, gender, learning styles, and number of students. Classroom rosters are not based on requests for particular teachers, friendship groups, neighborhoods, sports teams, or play groups.

  • Due to fluctuation of enrollment in a given grade, we may have combination grade classrooms (classrooms with students from multiple grade levels). Combination grade classrooms are balanced in the same manner as single grade classrooms, with a broad range of social, academic, and heterogeneous groupings.

As parents you may have pertinent information about your child that you would like considered in the placement process. If you would like to provide information about your child, please fill out the form found at the link below and turn it in to the East Ridge office by Friday, May 10, 2019. Please remember that verbal or written requests for specific teachers will not be considered. Your input form will be shared with your child’s current teacher, so you do not need to approach this year’s teacher with input or requests. Your input will also be shared with next year’s teacher.

We want what is best for your child. Students thrive when parents and teachers work together to provide the best learning opportunity for all children. We truly value and appreciate your partnership.

If you would like to fill out the optional parent input form for 2019-2020, follow this link:  Optional Parent Input Form

Warmly,
Sarah White

Progress Reports

Dear Family of NSD Elementary Student(s),

As we noted in November, progress reports in April will only be mailed home if a student is not meeting standard. If you do not receive a progress report, it means your student is performing at standard in reading, writing, and math at this time.

If you do receive a progress report, teachers will have noted specifically where students are not performing at standard in Reading, Writing, or Math with an “N”. These reports also contain a section on “Behaviors that Promote Student Learning.” Teachers may also note if a student exhibits these traits “Sometimes” or “Rarely” in the box next to behaviors if they are of concern at this time in the year.

We believe these changes will help us continue to provide timely and informative feedback on your student’s progress throughout the year.

SBA Testing

The Smarter Balanced Assessment testing window for grades 3-5 at East Ridge will be from 4/25 - 6/11/19.
It is important your student attend school and arrive on time as testing will begin at 9:00 am.

**We encourage attendance during testing days as missing these days can be disruptive to your student, as well as the rest of the class. If your child is absent (sick) on a testing day, please notify the 24 hour attendance line at 425-408-4410.

**Revised SBA Schedule**

Revised SBA Testing Schedule for 3-5th grades

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration packets are now available in the East Ridge office.
If you have packets out, please return them. If you know of someone with a kindergartner, please encourage them to come to the office to register their student. We are working on classroom numbers and staffing for next year.

Track and Field

Track and field practices will begin April 16 and run through May 16. Practice will be held on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 pm.

Meet dates and times:
4/30   4:45   ER & Woodin at Sunrise
5/7     4:45   Sunrise & CL at East Ridge
5/14   4:45   Wellington & ER at Hollywood Hill
5/21 2019 Junior Olympics at WHS

Track and Field Volunteer Opportunities

Given the number of concurrent activities at practices and at meets, track and field requires a lot of parent volunteer support.  Please consider volunteering to enhance your student’s athlete experience.  Your enthusiasm and support means so much to a student athlete that may need some reinforcement to get over a high jump bar or to take a few seconds off their dash time.
Please consider volunteering to help at least at one practice (or more), at the 1 home meet, or at the Junior Olympics, or all three.  Feel free to join in at any practice that fits your schedule.  No need to sign up.  Just show up!

As for meets, we will be hosting 1 home meet on Tuesday May 7.  We are also in charge of 1 event at the Junior Olympics.  Parent volunteers are needed to run the meets.  No experience is necessary.  Please sign up to help at the home meet and/or the Junior Olympics at the below link. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F44ABA822A6FE3-east2

Many thanks,

Nurse’s Corner

Welcome back from Spring break. I hope everyone had a nice break. Hopefully we will have some nice weather
From your nurse:

  • Now that it is Spring (technically), seasonal allergies can be a problem. If your child uses medications for seasonal allergies that may need to be given at school (even if over-the-counter) you will need to bring in a completed “Medication Authorization Form” along with the medication.
  • Remember that cough drops, throat lozenges, ointments and creams are considered a medication (By the state OSPI) and require a completed medication authorization form in order to have at school.
  • If you anticipate your child having medications at school next year, you can start getting the “Medication Authorizations Form” completed. The MD/provider just needs to but the start date for September 2019 and check “End of school year” box. You can bring in completed forms anytime.
  • For Parents/Guardians of current 5th grade students, this is a reminder that they will need Tdap before entering 6th grade.

Marker Recycle with the PTA!

East Ridge PTA is excited to tell you about a very special program we're coordinating at our school in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing program devised to repurpose used markers rather than sending them to landfills!

The ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers in the United States and Canada since 2013, and uses the most advanced plastic conversion technologies available today to make wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity that can be used to heat homes, cook food, and power vehicles.

We will be collecting used any type and any brand markers that are ready to be discarded. Please help support our efforts by sending in any used markers you may have around the house/ classrooms - even non-Crayola brands! Highlighters and dry erase markers can also be included. Drop-off boxes will be located in Art Room and also in the front office to deposit the markers. Last day for collection is June 21.

Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of people like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can continue to keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.
Remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!

Recycle Any Brand Washable Marker, Permanent Marker, White Board/ Dry Erase Marker & Highlighter. With or Without Caps!
