BLM at School
February is Black History Month! In addition to raising awareness of the month, our Racial and Educational Justice department wants to share resources and encourages you to celebrate. The concept of Black History Month was created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a scholar, activist, author and historian. He has come to be known as the “Father of Black History” for his efforts to insert and elevate the experiences, histories and key contributions of Black peoples in American history. You can read Woodson’s full biography here.
Below is a list of virtual events for elementary students and families to participate in, hosted by the Racial and Educational Justice Department. *All events will be recorded.*
Tuesday, Feb. 2: Elementary Read-Aloud and Q&A with LaTisha Joseph and Ebony Harvey
Intended Audience: For all of Northshore’s elementary students, families and staff
Time and Webinar Link: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm http://bit.ly/nsdreadaloud
About the Event:
LaTisha Joseph, librarian at Northshore’s Woodmoor Elementary, and Ebony Harvey, principal at Northshore’s Woodmoor Elementary, will facilitate a read aloud and Q&A for elementary students with the two children’s books I'm Every Good Thing by Derrick Barnes and The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander.

Friday, Feb. 5: Community Webinar
Intended Audience: For all of Northshore’s students, families, community members, staff, and educators
Time and Webinar Link: 5:00 - 6:00 pm http://bit.ly/northshoreblm
About the Event:
Various Northshore community members will assemble a panel to be in conversation about their experiences, what it means for Black lives to matter at school, and what it means to be unapologetic about speaking their truth.
The Racial and Educational Justice Department hopes that during February and beyond, students, families, and staff can learn new things and help us celebrate the lived experiences, cultures, histories, backgrounds, and identities of our Black students and staff in the Northshore School District. We are better together.
**Important 5th Grade Testing Information**
Hi Cap testing will require 5th graders to use a NSD laptop. If you already have a NSD laptop you do not need another one. If you have a 5th grader and do not have a NSD laptop, please complete this form ASAP and indicate that it is for Hi Cap testing. Laptops will be available for pick up from East Ridge on 2/5 during material distribution (see below).
Kindergarten and New Student 2021-2022 Registration
Information on 2021-2022 Kindergarten registration and 2021-2022 new student registration will be coming soon. Please check our website for updated information we will receive from the District.
Parent Schoology Groups
We are working on establishing Parent Connection Groups in Schoology for each grade level. The purpose of these groups would be to give parents the opportunity to connect and communicate. Some parents who join the group might choose to organize/host social ZOOMS or interest-based Zooms for students in the class/grade. Our ASB (student leadership) may also ask these parents to help them set up student social zoom times for specific grades or grade bands. Participation in the group would be optional. (Any parent who offers to host something for students must be background-checked as a volunteer). It is important to understand that this Parent Connection Schoology group is NOT a:
-
Forum for complaints about District policy or procedure
-
Forum related to performance of District staff (those should be brought to the appropriate District or school representative)
-
Place for discussions inconsistent with the intent of the Group
-
A place for any behaviors inconsistent with District policies or procedures (such as the Technology Use Policy and Procedure, 2022/2022P)
-
A place to ask questions of the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher will not be a part of this group.
We are looking for a lead parent for each grade. The Parent Lead would fill out a district request form to have the group created in Schoology (Mrs. White would create the group for us once the request form is approved at the district level). The main role of the parent lead would be to initiate and moderate the Schoology group, including inviting members of the class/grade to join. Mrs. White will provide training for the leads for how to use the Schoology Group.
Please email Mrs. White at swhite@nsd.org if you are willing to be a Lead for your child’s grade. Thank you!

We are a stronger community because of those differences. This week’s brain break activity is Sports Clubs. Teachers may be using these in class activities, and these are also activities kids and families can do for fun or for breaks at home. Thank you PTA for these great resources!

February Trait: OPTIMISM
Optimism Definition: Feeling hopeful that risks are worth taking and that problems will work their way out. Looking on the bright side - focusing on the positive instead of the negative. When you do something new, you think, "I can try," and give it your best shot because that's how you grow.

PTA seeking President and VP of Events!
Our dear and amazing Lillie Linville is sitting as acting president, but has already exceeded her 2 year term limit and needs to be replaced per our bylaws. We need a new President ASAP to relieve her of her duties! You will have tons of fun with our board and lots and lots of support!
Our VP of Events changed schools recently and we are in need of someone to fill this important and fun board position! As with everything PTA, this position is very flexible this year and will reflect the current needs and remote design of activities. Do you have some great ideas of how we can raise morale, stay connected, and help our kids get the most out of this unique year? We need your help to see it through!
Email president@erpta.org with questions!
