From Mrs. White

Dear East Ridge Family,

As the 2021-22 school year ends, I am so grateful! It is such an honor to be part of this incredible school community. Your partnership with us meant more than ever this year. We know that the challenges of distance learning were great, and we are proud of our families, students, and staff for their resilience and dedication to make this the best school year possible.

The students leaving this year as fifth graders are the kindergarteners who started just six years ago. They will take a little bit of many different parts of East Ridge with them. Dedicated staff, countless parent volunteers, and supportive families have all had a role in these students’ success and preparation for their future. At East Ridge, we work hard to prepare them to leave us, and when they do, we know they are ready!

We also have a few staff members leaving East Ridge for new adventures next year:

  • We are celebrating the long legacy of Janie Anderson as our music teacher at East Ridge since it opened in 1991! Mrs. Anderson has made a lasting impact on our school and community with music and more! Mrs. Anderson is retiring.

  • We will greatly miss Emily Anthony, whose family is moving out of state next year. Mrs. Anthony has provided our kindergarteners and their families such a positive beginning to their school experience at East Ridge for eight years.

  • We are so grateful to Stephanie Donohoe, 1st grade teacher, for the positive impact she has had on students and families last spring and all year this year. Stephanie will be moving on to a new teaching position next year.

  • We are so proud of Amy Goodgion, Learning Center Paraeducator, who will be starting her career as a teacher! She will be teaching Kindergarten at Seattle Christian School next year.

  • We are also wishing Cheryl Lichttenegger, our Kitchen Manager, a very happy retirement! We will surely miss her smiles and warm greetings to kids and staff each day!

  • We have been so grateful for Carol Michel, our school psychologist for the last two years. Carol will be serving a different elementary school in Northshore next year. She has provided our special education team and families with such compassionate and clear evaluation services, and will be missed!

  • We are also sad to say goodbye to Daniella Rizo, whose family is moving out of state next year. Mrs. Rizo has been such an impressive member of our 4th and 5th grade team the last three years and has played such an important role in our students’ readiness for middle school.

Please join me in welcoming the following new staff next year. These teachers come to us with solid credentials and experience, as well as a commitment to make East Ridge the very best place for teaching and learning:

  • Brittney Harrer will be teaching first grade. Brittney was a teaching intern at East Ridge several years ago and has taught in the Wellington PACE program the last two years. We are thrilled to welcome Brittney back to East Ridge.

  • Sara Taylor will be teaching fifth grade. Sara most recently taught at Sunrise and Bear Creek Elementary. Sara has also taught in the Riverview and Renton School Districts. We are excited to have Sara join our staff!

  • Tiana Shuford, previously our Kindergarten/1st grade music teacher, will be joining us full time as our general music teacher! Tiana taught music at East Ridge, Hollywood Hill and Sunrise this year, and is looking forward to putting all of her energy into our school community next year.

We are still in the process of hiring for a few other positions and will update the community in August. We look forward to greeting all of our students and staff full time and in person in September.

Our staff wishes you a wonderful summer! Be safe, play hard, and as our state and county begin opening up safely, I hope you will spend lots of time together as a family and with friends building those lifetime memories!

Fondly,

Sarah White, Principal

Nurse's Corner

A kind reminder that if your child is due to get immunizations over the summer, you will need to send the updated immunization information to the school nurse.

The Department of Health has updated the Immunization Manual for Schools, Preschools, and Child Care Facilities (PDF) to state that complete immunization documentation (completed and verified or exemption) will be needed for all students in public or private school, regardless of program, and must be in place before they are allowed to attend. This includes home school networks and virtual (remote) learning.

Contact Nurse Gerry with any questions (gcullins@nsd.org).

i-Ready Summer Use

We are pleased to inform you that i-Ready will be available during the summer (through August 13th). We believe that all children will benefit from continued use of i-Ready. Please support your child to spend about 45-90 minutes per week on i-Ready Math and 45-90 minutes per week on i-Ready Reading throughout the summer.

I-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your child can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your child engaged as they learn. Consistent use of i-Ready will help your child to continue to grow and prevent learning loss.

To log in during the summer, your child will first log into Clever (my.nsd.org) using their NSD account. Then they will click on the I-Ready icon.

Here is a link to the I-Ready family guide, which gives more information about how to support your child and see their progress.

Mrs. Morris, one of our East Ridge teachers, will be keeping an eye on student i-Ready use over the summer. If you need help with your child’s account during July or August, please reach out to Mrs. Morris at kmorris@nsd.org.

This can include effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating yourself. This week’s brain break is Mystery Creature. Thank you, PTA for this resource!
